Most of the commentary in the linked article seems to be leaning towards the truth, that Scargill was nothing more than an exemplary labour jackass leeching a living off of the working man. Now the head of the Socialist Labour Party no less, while the miners ... well ... I guess if there's going to be a class war, there's going to be class casualties.

The only people I've ever heard strenuously decrying "class war" were hypocrites who aimed to profit off of it, the Marxes and Scargills of history who sucker hard-working people into buying a load of tripe for a small portion of each week's wages.

The thing I remember the Thatcher era most for is the sudden appearance of child beggars on the streets of Britain.
I just stared at this kid on the street in a blanket thinking "wtf is HE doing?"

I had never seen one before because we simply did not have them.
I had believed that only places like Calcutta had that sort of problem.

That Right wing 'caring' christian hypocrite Thatcher reintroduced us to this phenomenon, and made millions of us who didn't normally bother, highly political at the same time.

Although I was in fact just twelve years old at the time and living on the other side of the pond, as the child of a British family I was tangentially aware of the miners' strike, since members of my family were talking about it. But I am quite passionate about a number of other events which occurred when I was a child, before my birth, even before the existence of America, or the UK for that matter. The miners' strike just isn't significant to me, personally. Of course it was a huge deal to people imediately effected by it, and of course it had a dramatic effect on a number of people not effected by it, and of course it did wonders for the Scargills of the world and the intellectually and morally bankrupt "friends of the workers" who chat with furrowed brows in the coffee houses of the world about such things. I do not mean to detract from it, old man.
